Post-World War II brought the advent of the car and suburbia which in turn birthed the concept of the indoor shopping mall. However, the turn of the century saw many malls fall into abandonment with the Great Recession and Internet shopping were the final nails in the coffin.
Fortunately, for Highland Mall, Redleaf Development and Austin Community College saw the mall as a diamond in the rough and jointly bought the mall. With the first phase of the ACC Highland Mall campus being an award winning hit, and the first multi-family units delivering soon, it is a great time to reacquaint ourselves with this exciting redevelopment project.
As such, SMPS Austin welcomes Matt Whelan of Redleaf and Douglas Gibbins, chair of the ACC Highland Campus Advisory Committee and former board candidate to update us on the project. They will share what's been completed at the former mall, what's currently on the design boards, and upcoming opportunities to collaborate with each entity.
