June Luncheon: Public & Private Experts Present an Update on Development along Highway 130

Join SMPS Austin on Tuesday, June 12th for a panel discussion including both public and private sector experts: Trey Fletcher, Interim City Manager for City of Pflugerville, Dr. Kelly Crook, Superintendent of Del Valle ISD and Doug Launius and Karl Koebel, Principals at Marketplace Real Estate Group. The panel will be moderated by Colin Pope, longtime editor of the Austin Business Journal. Panelists will give an update on the Velocity Crossing development, how this development, along with other recent development has affected Del Valle Independent School District, and how the recent SH 130 project will help Pflugerville and other high-growth areas. You won’t want to miss this lively discussion about one of the last undeveloped areas in the greater Austin area getting lots of attention.

Dr. Kelly K. Crook, Del Valle ISD Superintendent
With a myriad of extensive experience in the public school environment, and a product of public schools herself, Dr. Kelly Crook was named the first Female Superintendent of Del Valle ISD in December 2011. Her financial acumen and long range planning expertise stems from her experience serving for six years as the Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations and Director of Accountability for Del Valle ISD. Dr. Crook’s background includes ESL classroom engagement in the Dallas ISD and Frisco ISD, service as middle school assistant principal in Leander ISD, and program specialist at the Texas Education Agency.  A native Austinite, she received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the Cooperative Superintendency Program at the University of Texas at Austin. A fearless champion for her staff and students, Dr. Crook presides over a diverse and achievement-oriented district that serves over 11,300 students on 15 campuses in southeast Travis County.

Doug Launius, Principal, Marketplace Real Estate Group

Doug Launius is a principal and broker at Marketplace Real Estate Group. He is also a general partner for both Velocity Crossing, a ±390 acre mixed-use development project located at Highway 71 and SH 130 and EastRidge, a 144 acre project on FM 812 across from the Circuit of the Americas. He and his partner, Karl Koebel, own or control over 1,000 acres in the Del Valle area and serve as the brokerage team for the Del Valle Independent School District.

Doug Launius began his real estate career in Houston in 1981. He has brokered hundreds of millions of dollars in deals, raised significant amounts of equity from both private and institutional investors, and personally invests in real estate, oil and gas ventures as well as start-up and publicly traded companies.  A notable deal was the roll up and ultimate sale to Goldman Sachs of a portfolio of 25 apartment complexes, comprising approximately 5,500 units and owned by 22 separate owners in Houston, Texas. Doug envisioned and created the opportunity, structured and packaged it, and held it together until it closed. It was the largest deal of its kind ever completed in the U.S. and won numerous awards including Deal of the Year in Houston.
